Dental Recruitment

Temporary Registration:

This scheme allows dentists who are not eligible for full registration to practise dentistry in the UK for a limited time in supervised positions for training, teaching, or research purposes. Temporary registration, however, does not allow dentists to engage in general or private practise, or in community dental services, but it does ensure dental assistant positions in the UK.

An abroad qualified dentist who holds a dental qualification from a university recognised by UK ENIC for the purposes of temporary registration and the overseas registration examination (ORE) can apply for temporary registration in particular approved roles.

Temporary registration is granted for a minimum of 84 days and a maximum of 365 days at a time and may be renewed by means of application, for up to a maximum of 1826 days ( 5 years ).

Overseas Registration Examination – ORE

Dentists from outside the EEA whose qualifications are not accepted by the GDC must sit the overseas registration examination (ORE).

The ORE assesses the clinical skills and knowledge of dentists from outside the EU whose qualifications are not recognised by the GDC for full registration. The test is based on the dental curriculum in the United Kingdom and employs modern assessment methodologies to provide a robust and consistent examination.

Dentists who pass this exam are eligible to apply for full registration to practise in the United Kingdom. All applicants must exhibit an appropriate level of English language ability before taking the ORE and must demonstrate their linguistic competency by taking the IELTS exam.

Make sure you meet the clinical experience and English language requirements before applying for the ORE. You must provide proof of the following:

1. Clinical experience requirement- You must have at least 1600 hours of clinical experience in the dental chair where you have personally treated patients. This clinical experience will consist of either hours spent conducting relevant examinations and giving dental treatment:

  • During your Dental Degree
  • During post qualification experience
  • Or a combination of both

It could also be done during the temporary registration period. This does not include time spent observing other dentists or aiding other dentists/dental students with diagnosis/treatment planning or treatment delivery.

2. English language requirement- IELTS/recent primary dental qualification taught and examined in English/recent pass in a language test for registration with a regulatory authority in a country where English is the first and native language/recent experience practising in a country where English is the first and native language.

ORE part 1 is intended to assess candidates’ knowledge application in clinical practise. It comprises of two computer-based exam papers (each lasting three hours):

Paper A covers    Clinically applied dental science and clinically applied human disease

Paper B covers clinical dental topics such as legislation and ethics, as well as health and safety.

Each test period has a maximum of 200 places available. The exam takes place at King’s College London and costs £806.

ORE part 2- designed for candidates to demonstrate practical clinical skills.

For each examination period a maximum of 144 candidates can undertake the Part 2 exam (OSCE). The current cost of the examination is £2,929 per candidate. Each candidate will be allowed four attempts for Part 2.

Vocational Training

Immigration: Dentists who pass the ORE test may be required to complete up to a year of foundation training before working for the NHS. Exam success does not ensure employment.

Dentists must be on NHS England’s NHS dentistry Performers list in order to work in general dentistry practice and do NHS work.

If you practice entirely privately and do not handle NHS patients, you do not need to complete this training or be on an NHS list. However, the number of available positions could be much higher.

Biometric Residence Permit:

A biometric residence permit (BRP) is a card issued to foreign nationals that contains your biographic facts (name, date and place of birth), ‘biometric information’ (fingerprints and digital facial image), and specifies your immigration status and entitlements while in the UK.

When an individual applies for a visa or immigration, they are automatically issued a BRP. In passports, a 30-day sticker or vignette is issued, enabling adequate time to go to the UK. You will have ten days after your arrival to collect your BRP from a post office branch, as specified in your decision lette

A Tier 2 visa (sponsored by the applicant’s employer) will be required for all applicants.

Verification of identity checks is used in the NHS as part of the recruitment process to ensure that an identity is real and belongs to the person presenting it.

This check can be completed by using BRP cards to verify identity.
